Go All In for Crusader student-athletes today!

May 14, 2021

Today, I’m asking you, and all Crusaders, to go ALL IN.

All year, our student-athletes have dedicated themselves to looking towards the future, growing stronger as individuals and teammates athletically, academically and personally.

With fortitude, we are continuing to prepare our 700 Crusaders to compete at the highest level. Just as they are committed to training and learning, to capitalizing on the opportunities in front of them, we are committed to our vision – delivering a transformative student-athlete experience driven by competitive success.

Year after year, regardless of the circumstances, one thing remains constant — the strength of Crusaders when we go ALL IN for one another. Every dollar you give today will be dedicated to continuing our tradition of developing champions. And today, thanks to the Hope + Access campaign, all new and increased gifts are being matched 100% for financial aid.

Together, we are strong. Together, we shape our future. Together, let’s go ALL IN for Crusader student-athletes.

Go Cross Go!

An Update from Head Coach Bob Chesney

March 12, 2021

Well, HERE WE GO!!!

Football season is finally upon us. It does not look exactly the same as football seasons of the past, but I can assure you that it FEELS very much the same for the young men and coaches on our team.

How this four game season will play out is still unknown but we have a schedule, practice times secured, virtual meetings locked in, one hotel, four busses and ninety eager young men ready for the start of this journey. Let’s GO!!!

As many of you are aware, our team arrived on campus in mid-January, and, after a quarantine period, we began our strength and conditioning program. We were all impressed with our team’s fitness levels and the commitment of our Crusaders to be ready after an unprecedented layoff.

After two weeks in our weight room and conditioning pods, we were able to move to larger groups for walk-throughs, and a few weeks after that, we entered into our 2021 spring football camp. We were all anxious to see how much from the virtual meetings of the last year had been absorbed and were ready for physical use. To our team’s credit, they were prepared, and they are continuing to get better each day.

As I mentioned in my last letter, we have and will continue to embrace the challenges that this year has presented. We have been working in overdrive to overcome the time we would have committed this fall to bolstering important aspects of our game, from schematic competence, situational awareness and fundamentals, to camaraderie, team dynamics and the overall flow of practice. We asked our Crusaders to dedicate themselves to soaking up those lessons and skills in the time we had leading up to Game #1… and they did.

It is an enormous credit to our young men to handle their new normal in such a professional way. I cannot imagine going through football camp while school is in session, nevertheless doing so while dealing with quarantines and contact tracing, meeting virtually for football install and review, attending virtual classes, eating to-go meals at home, and only after all of this, getting to play football – and doing all of this, practice included, while wearing a mask! You ALL should be VERY proud of these young men – now more so than ever– and I hope you continue to support them unconditionally, because they are doing something that none of us have ever done.

I would also like to acknowledge and congratulate Artie Grutt ’02, as he transitions into his new role as head of the 90-Wide. It goes without saying – but I’ll say it anyway – that we are FOREVER indebted to Larry Doyle ’83 for all that he has done to support our current team and to support every Crusader who has benefitted from this unrivaled program. I do not believe that anyone could fully understand the amount of time and energy that Larry has put into making the 90-Wide “Best in Class,” and the amount of time he was willing to give to me and our team will forever be appreciated. I look forward to continuing this program with Artie and each of you.

Wheels roll to Bethlehem, PA early Friday morning for our first game, March 13 against Lehigh. While we wish we could have you physically behind us, cheering us on, we know we will feel your spirit, and I hope that you will also feel ours.

We will continue to take things one week at a time, and this week it’s GAME WEEK!!

Crusaders All In this Giving Tuesday!

Holy Cross student-athletes are dedicated and resilient. When our world — and in turn, our campus life — changed this year, we adapted. Through challenge after challenge, our commitment to our education and our athletics never faltered. And today, we remain focused and hopeful for the future.

This is why we are asking the Holy Cross community to come together right now in support of our student-athletes.

Whether you make a gift to the Fund for Athletics Excellence or to one of our 27 varsity teams, your generosity helps position us for an even stronger return to competition.

In the face of unprecedented challenges, we know that one thing remains constant — the strength of Crusaders when we go all in to support one another. On this Giving Tuesday, your gift is for our future. With your support, our next great moment awaits.

An Update from Head Coach Bob Chesney

I hope this letter finds you and your family safe and healthy. What an interesting few months it has been!

I’d first like to start off by acknowledging that yesterday — Nov. 23 — was exactly ONE year since our home win against Georgetown to secure the 2019 Patriot League title. What a great ride that was, and who would have thought 2020 would look so different?

I am sure you are wondering how your team has been doing over the last few months.

Back in March and April, we were in the midst of our virtual spring season and still hopeful for a return in the fall. We were prepared, had extreme confidence in one another, and felt that we were overcoming many odds. We could not wait to get back together as a team. However, the virus had other plans.

As each school and team in our league began to figure out its next steps, we did the same. We worked through many different scenarios and eventually landed at the realization that we were not going to be able to have our FULL team back for the fall semester. We instead began a hybrid approach to practice, consistent with our school’s directive.

I credit our staff and players for staying POSITIVE and getting creative, which led to essential team productivity and growth. In that creativity, we found new ways to teach and interact that will serve us well moving forward.

This past semester saw a handful of players on campus and a few others commuting from their MA, NH and CT homes two to three times each week. A third group made the decision to move to the Worcester area in order to be with their team. All of these young men were committed, and as challenging as the fall may have been, NONE complained. Instead, they found ways to make the MOST out of each moment together.

Those who were unable to join us on campus stayed engaged at home and grew with their teammates through virtual meetings and film study, as well as through our strength and conditioning program. Our team’s discipline and commitment were on display each day, and throughout our entire fall practice schedule, we were proud to report ZERO COVID cases. That commitment to both safety and progress is to be commended.

We all FULLY understand what was, and continues to be, at stake during the fall and this upcoming holiday break. There will be no rest or complaints…only the commitment to one another and our desire to get better each and every day!

At this time, the spring season remains unclear, but we have hope. When we are approved to return, I am excited about our chances for making up on missed time and getting our team prepared for a potential spring season. Clearly, this will not be easy, but that is irrelevant. We have missed out on a great deal of football schematics, in-game situations, position-specific technique and evaluation of physical progress, but what team hasn’t? We know where we will be deficient and THAT is a start.

Every great story. Every great event throughout all of history. Every champion. They ALL have something in common — overcoming adversity.

For those who are unsure if the impossible can be done, BET ON PURPLE. It will serve you well!

Thank you for all of your continued support, and we look forward to seeing you again soon.
